Comments: Most of the works I call "untitled" have been given temporary titles for the sake of exhibitions or catalogue listing. This one has always been beyond words for me. It started out like many of the other "Pattern in Space" drawings but I just knew it had to go in a different direction. It sat on the drawing board unfinished for several weeks before I finally reached the place in my mind where I could carve up the background into the abstraction you see here. This kind of abstraction is difficult for me but some of the pattern pictures I had been working on seemed somehow too safe, too familiar. I needed to push into the unknown. I did something similar with Styx but the order of Styx broke down a little further into chaos than I am normally comfortable with.
