Objective
My goal is to collaborate with an educational institution or environmental organization whose mission is to promote sustainable climate goals such as carbon emissions reductions, sustainable energy, and public health by lowering pollution and ensuring that the public has access to good medical care. I have just finished a second degree, a B.S. in Environmental Science, and I am about to begin an MPH (Master’s in Public Health), with a global emphasis. My GPA in environmental science is 3.983 I earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1987, which complements well with my current studies, and I have never lost any passion for history and world political studies. In addition to my formal academic background, I have had a lifelong interest in linguistics, particularly in dialects and writing systems, as my career experience implies. My coursework including STEM skills such as physics, chemistry, biology, and climatology, forms a good base for a scientific career, but my continued discipline as a proofreader will reinforce my environmental and public health studies. I would like to find work within research as well as proofreading and I particularly want to contribute to publishing research on environmental solutions to the global climate crisis. Owing to my political science and linguistics background, I am a diplomatic advocate and possess good correspondence skills. At 60, I have learned a lot in life and can offer experience, and perhaps a bit of wisdom and leadership skills as well.
Abilities Summary
I have acquired many skills over the past forty years. I am a compulsive student and all my life I don’t believe there was ever a time that I was not exploring and acquiring fresh knowledge. I have been wrong at times and right at others (the majority I hope!) and I have many accomplishments that I’m happy about. While it is impossible to condense everything that I have learned into a couple of paragraphs, most of my vocational skills reflect my ability in linguistics and communication, coupled with a decades-long interest in science and technology. Highlights of my career so far are in proofreading and education, but I would like to expand my activities into environmental research, particularly in areas that most directly affect human health.
Summary of Major Skills:
1. Proofreading and copyediting: I have proofread approximately 100 medical research papers for doctors in Japan, and many of those papers went on to be published in prestigious journals, such as The New England Journal of Medicine. Some of my clients went on to give presentations of their work in cancer treatments and respiratory illnesses in international settings such as Germany and the United States. I have proofread over 200 research papers by graduate students and professors researching the effects of climate change and hypothesizing solutions. I have proofread civil court judgments settled in the court system of Macau, China, and in the Superior Court of Kyushu, Southern Japan. Over the years I have edited and translated a wide variety of literature from settings ranging from homestay invitations to college transcripts and recommendation letters.
2. TESOL and TEFL: My work in the TEFL classroom has been comprehensive and challenging. I tutored high school students for the TOEFL and Tokyo University entrance exams (English section). I taught English for Specific Purposes to lawyers and justices of the Supreme Court of Kyushu, Japan. I wrote English teaching curricula for my own English center, for the Japanese Ministry of Education, where I developed activity-based English programs for elementary schools, and for universities in China, where I was put in charge of the development and implementation of their English programs. I developed online homework and test-taking for my students in Chinese universities, which was a first at those schools. I also developed phonetics courses in China, based on reduced speech awareness. I have basic IT skills. I am familiar with and comfortable with computers and digital technology. Although I cannot claim to be proficient with any program languages, including markup languages such as HTML or basic languages such as Python, I can design and launch websites, run programs, and maintain databases. I am comfortable with the main word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications available as well as graphic applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator, but I am probably not familiar with lesser-known, specialized programs. Finally, I am fluent in Japanese, listening, speaking, and writing, and have basic skills in Chinese and possess a very basic knowledge of Spanish and other Romance languages.
